Route

A route describes the sequence or rules a product follows through a business process, such as receipt, storage and delivery.

Definition

In general ERP practice

A route describes the sequence or rules a product follows through a business process, such as receipt, storage and delivery.

In Odoo

In Odoo, routes use rules to determine how demand is supplied and which stock movements are created. A route can organise a two-step receipt, a pick–pack–ship delivery, replenishment from another warehouse or a dropship flow. Applicable settings depend on the product and warehouse configuration.

A practical example

For a pick–pack–ship route, staff first move the ordered goods to a packing area, then prepare the parcel, then validate dispatch. These are separate operations with separate source and destination locations.

How to use the concept

  1. Route versus location

A location answers where stock is. A route answers which steps or supply rules it follows.

  2. Route versus putaway

A putaway rule suggests a storage destination for received goods. A route governs the broader movement or replenishment flow.

  3. Start with real exceptions

Partial receipts, backorders, returns and transfers should work before additional steps are added. More steps also mean more operations for staff to validate.
