Location

A location is a defined place or stock position used to record where goods are held or how they move.

Definition

In general ERP practice

A location is a defined place or stock position used to record where goods are held or how they move.

In Odoo

Odoo uses locations as the source and destination of stock movements. Internal locations can represent a zone, rack, shelf or bin. Supplier, customer, transit, inventory-adjustment and scrap locations represent other stock relationships or movements; they are not all physical shelves.

A practical example

A receipt moves goods from a supplier location into receiving. An internal transfer moves them to Shelf A. A delivery moves them from internal stock to a customer location.

How to use the concept

  1. Physical storage

Internal locations should be named so employees can reliably find and count products.

  2. Virtual and external positions

Supplier and customer locations represent stock outside internal storage. Adjustment and scrap locations record specific changes to the stock balance.

  3. Location versus package

A package groups goods into a handling unit, such as a pallet. The package itself is stored at a location and can move between locations.
