Project Charter

A project charter authorizes a project and records its purpose, expected outcomes, scope, ownership, and initial constraints.

Definition

In general ERP practice

A project charter is a document that formally establishes a project and its business purpose. It commonly identifies the sponsor, project manager, objectives, high-level scope, expected outcomes, and initial budget or schedule constraints.

For an ERP selection project, a charter can authorize investigation of possible solutions without committing the business to a particular software vendor. Its approval establishes the mandate for subsequent requirements gathering and evaluation.

In Odoo

A company can organize delivery tasks in Odoo Project, but project tasks do not by themselves replace the internal approval of an ERP investment.

The charter describes why the company is undertaking the project; the configured project workspace supports the work needed to carry it out.

What to check in an ERP project

  1. Business purpose

Explain the problems and outcomes that justify the investment.

  2. Authority

Identify who sponsors the project and who approves major decisions.

  3. Boundaries

Record initial scope, funding assumptions, and time constraints.
