Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Model Context Protocol is a standard through which AI applications connect to external data and tools.
Definition
In general ERP practice
Model Context Protocol (MCP) defines a common way for an AI application to interact with an external system through an MCP server. The server exposes supported resources or tools; the AI application uses a compatible client connection.
The protocol is not the business application or the language model. Available data and actions depend on the specific server, configuration and access granted. A connection does not by itself establish data completeness or that every requested operation is supported.
In Odoo
In an Odoo environment, an MCP integration requires an appropriate server and an agreed interface to the business data or operations. Do not assume that any Odoo installation includes an MCP server or that every connector exposes the same capabilities.
In the UK modernization case linked below, the owner reports connecting Claude through MCP to make information easier to find. This is a project observation; it is not a general product availability or performance claim.
Separate the connection from the business outcome
Application
The AI application provides the user interaction and a compatible client.
Server
The MCP server exposes the specific resources or tools made available.
Business context
Check which records the connection can access and how the results support the actual workflow.
Official Odoo documentation
The Odoo-specific explanation above is based on the documentation for Odoo 19. Features and workflows can differ in other versions.
