Code Review

Code review examines proposed changes before acceptance. Learn what reviewers check and how it complements testing in Odoo development.

Definition

In general ERP practice

Code review is an examination of code by someone other than its author before the change is accepted. Reviewers consider the design, behaviour, complexity, tests and documentation, and provide feedback that the author addresses.

Review and testing provide different evidence. Review examines the implementation and its fit with the system; tests execute selected scenarios. Neither alone establishes that every possible failure has been excluded.

In Odoo

For Odoo customizations, review should consider the affected business workflow, installed modules, access rules and integrations. An AI-generated change needs the same scrutiny as any other proposed change.

A useful handover includes the requirement, the proposed changes, tests and known limitations. The reviewer can then compare the implementation with what users actually need.

A practical review package

  1. Requirement

The expected outcome, affected users and acceptance criteria.

  2. Changes and dependencies

The diff, reasons for the approach and affected modules or interfaces.

  3. Validation

Tests performed, remaining questions and the release plan.
