System Reengineering
System reengineering examines and changes an existing software system so it can meet a revised set of operational and technical requirements.
Definition
In general ERP practice
System reengineering examines and changes an existing software system so it can meet a revised set of operational and technical requirements.
Its scope can include understanding existing rules, restructuring architecture and changing implementation. Unlike behavior-preserving refactoring, a reengineering project may intentionally change the operating model; those changes need explicit acceptance criteria.
In Odoo
When an ERP is involved, separate the business processes to keep from those to redesign. An Odoo target should be evaluated against required processes and maintainable extensions, rather than assumed to reproduce every old customization.
What to check in a modernization project
Required behavior
Distinguish valuable business rules from obsolete workarounds.
Target scope
Specify which architecture and processes are changing.
Acceptance
Test the agreed target behavior and the data/interface transition, not just code completion.

The Odoo-specific explanation above is based on the documentation for Odoo 19. Features and workflows can differ in other versions.
