Job Costing

Job costing assigns costs to an individual job or project so the company can compare its estimate with committed and actual costs and assess profitability.

Definition

In general ERP practice

Job costing assigns costs to an individual job or project so the company can compare its estimate with committed and actual costs and assess profitability.

In Odoo

In Odoo, project profitability and analytic accounting connect revenue and costs to a project. Meaningful comparisons depend on consistent project allocation, cost categories and the transactions included in the report.

Follow the same job from estimate to execution

  1. Estimated cost

The labor, materials, equipment and other costs expected when the bid is prepared.

  2. Committed cost

Amounts committed through purchase orders or other approved obligations; these are not necessarily paid or recorded as actual expenses yet.

  3. Actual cost

Costs recorded against the job under the agreed accounting and operational rules.

Profit and cash are separate views

A profitable job can still experience a cash shortage if customers pay after suppliers and workers must be paid. Compare job economics alongside payment terms and expected receipts. Do not count the same purchase order and supplier bill twice when combining reports.
