Backorder
A backorder records the unfulfilled remainder of an order when only part of its required quantity is completed.
Definition
In general ERP practice
A backorder records the unfulfilled remainder of an order when only part of its required quantity is completed. It preserves demand for later execution rather than silently treating a partial delivery as complete.
In Odoo
Odoo can create a backorder when a transfer is validated with less than the required quantity, subject to operation-type settings. Manufacturing also has backorder workflows; the residual demand must be distinguished from a newly entered customer order.
Official Odoo documentation
The Odoo-specific explanation above is based on the documentation for Odoo 19. Features and workflows can differ in other versions.
