Technical Debt

Technical debt is the additional effort needed to change software because its internal structure or implementation falls short of what the team needs.

Definition

In general ERP practice

Technical debt is the additional effort needed to change software because its internal structure or implementation falls short of what the team needs.

The debt metaphor separates an improvement investment from the recurring extra effort of leaving the constraint in place. Not every defect, old technology or business requirement is technical debt.

In Odoo

For an Odoo project, review custom-module structure, duplicated rules and difficult upgrade dependencies against actual change needs. A version upgrade alone does not establish that every customization has become maintainable.

What to check in a modernization project

  1. Recurring cost

Identify changes that repeatedly require disproportionate effort.

  2. Improvement scope

Choose a bounded code or architecture improvement that can be verified.

  3. Priority

Compare future change demand with the cost and risk of addressing the constraint now.
