Master Production Schedule (MPS)
Understand a master production schedule, how Odoo uses demand forecasts and stock targets, and how planned replenishment differs from confirmed production orders.
Definition
In general ERP practice
A master production schedule (MPS) is a time-phased plan for the products a business intends to supply. It translates expected demand and inventory targets into planned quantities for defined periods, supporting coordination between sales, production and procurement.
An MPS addresses what should be available and when. It is different from a detailed machine schedule, which assigns individual operations to resources and execution times.
In Odoo
Odoo’s MPS uses forecast demand, starting stock and stock targets to suggest replenishment quantities for future periods. The planning grid can include manufactured products, purchased products and component demand.
A planned quantity is not the same as an existing purchase or manufacturing order. The documented product configuration includes a replenishment trigger; in a manual workflow users create supply orders from the planning suggestions. Odoo’s documentation cautions against simultaneously applying reordering rules to products managed through MPS, because overlapping policies can distort demand and create unnecessary supply.
Illustrative period balance
Starting stock
20 units are available at the beginning of the period.
Forecast demand
50 units are expected to be needed; target ending stock is 10.
Planned replenishment
40 units are needed: 20 − 50 + 40 = 10, before other demands or constraints.
Illustrative planning balance, not a capacity promise or an ERPixel client forecast.
Separate forecast, policy and execution
Review the demand assumptions, stock target and replenishment policy before creating supply orders. The plan should also be checked against lead times and available production resources. A forecast quantity alone does not guarantee that an item can be manufactured by the required date.
