Apps and Modules

Learn the difference between ERP applications and software modules, how Odoo uses both concepts, and why module dependencies matter when changing a database.

Definition

In general ERP practice

An application is a functional area of business software that users work with, such as Sales or Inventory. A module is an installable unit that adds or extends software behaviour. An application can depend on several modules, including supporting features that users do not open separately.

The distinction matters when evaluating scope: a visible business application and the technical components behind it are related, but they describe different levels of the system.

In Odoo

Odoo manages applications and supporting modules through the Apps dashboard. Its default Apps filter shows applications; the Extra filter makes additional modules available in searches.

Installing a module can install its dependencies. Removing an application can remove dependent modules and their records. Odoo’s documentation therefore recommends testing changes on a duplicate database before altering a production installation. An app upgrade is also different from upgrading the entire database to a new major Odoo version.

Application and module compared

  1. Application

A user-facing business capability, such as inventory management.

  2. Supporting module

An installable extension or dependency that enables part of that capability.

  3. Custom module

An extension developed to meet requirements beyond the available standard behaviour.

Why dependencies matter

Choosing applications is also choosing how business processes connect. Review the affected workflows and data before adding or removing a component; an apparently small change can affect another department.
